L G Cupid Hornsted began his motor racing career in 1910 racing
Benz cars at Brooklands. From 1910-1912 he had several
victories & good finishes, driving 60hp and 150hp Benz.
After taking delivery of the third 'Blitzen Benz' to be built by
the factory, he set a number of world records, as well as race
victories.
The 'Blitzen Benz' was fitted with a 4-cylinder 21.5 litre engine
developing 200hp.
On 22nd December 1913, at Brooklands, Hornsted set world records
for 1/2 mile from a standing start at 113.8 km/hour, and 1km from a
standing start at 118.4 km/hour.
On 14th January 1914, 7 new records were set, over 1 & 2
miles from a standing start, and 1/2 mile, 1, 2, 5 & 10 miles
from a flying start, including 199.3 km/hour for the 1/2 mile with a
flying start.
His World Land Speed Record was set on 24th June 1914, at
Brooklands, at an average speed of 124.09 mph over 1 mile.
This was the first record set using the average of two runs in
opposite directions, and the first mile record officially recognised
by the A.I.A.C.R.
