Selwyn Francis Edge began his motor racing career with the Napier
Motor Company in 1900. His first success was winning the 1902
Gordon Bennett cup race, staged between Paris and Innsbruck.
During the construction of the Brooklands circuit in England, he
decided to attempt a world record for driving 24 Hours.
In June 1907, before Brooklands was officially opened, S F Edge
drove a 60 H.P. six-cylinder Napier car around Brooklands for 24
Hours, on 28/29th June, stopping for tyres, water, oil &
petrol. The distance achieved was 1581 miles, 1310 yards, at
an average speed over 65 miles per hour. A record that stood
until 1925. Several other world records being achieved for
various times & distances, including the 1 hour record at 70.07
mph.
In 1921, again at Brooklands, he set a record for
the 'Double-Twelve' run, as 24 hour racing was no longer
permitted at Brooklands. Edge drove a Spyker C4 fitted with
streamlined bodywork, & a 6-cylinder 5.7 litre Maybach engine.
The distance was almost 1783 miles at an average speed of 74 miles
per hour / 119km per hour.
